On May 20 Nina Klimburg-Witjes organised a workshop at re:publica 2026 in Berlin, together with Vitali Braun, from the ESA Space Debris Office, and Norman Schumann, from Klima° vor acht. Entitled “We never gonna give up space – Wie wir alternative Weltraumzukünfte gestalten können”, the workshop encouraged participants to imagine hopeful space futures, using speculative design methods. While formulating political visions for the future of spaceflight beyond 2100 requires creative future-oriented thinking, the workshop also dealt with the issues of space debris, militarisation and resource extraction, which already create pressing questions in the present.
